Tired of the same old application advice? If “be yourself” and “proofread your grammar” aren’t cutting it, we hear you. Discover five actionable tips to elevate your applications and stand out from the crowd. These are relevant to any opportunity listed on Paths Unlocked. Ready to level up? Keep reading.

1. Start with a Captivating Opening

Your personal statement or cover letter should grab the reader’s attention immediately. Use a unique anecdote or experience that connects YOU to the opportunity. For example, instead of saying, “I have always been interested in health,” start with:   “When I worked with a maternal health clinic to implement a mobile health app, I realized the power of technology in addressing healthcare disparities.” Never open with “My name is _” or “I’m _”. You want to stand out from the batch and give a strong first impression.

2. Tailor Each Application to the Program

Use the specific language, values, and goals of the organization in your application. Review the program or partner’s mission statement or recent projects, and integrate those into your statement. For example, if the program emphasizes “interdisciplinary collaboration,” highlight an experience where you worked across disciplines.

3. Quantify Your Impact

Too many applicants give vague and fluffy sentences that don’t provide any concrete evidence. Include specific metrics to illustrate the results of your work. Instead of saying, “I helped organize events,” try:   “I coordinated a series of 10 professional development workshops, which increased attendance by 30% and secured $5,000 in sponsorships.” Selection committees review countless applications, and numbers can make your achievements stand out. Quantifying your impact demonstrates measurable results and helps evaluators visualize the significance of your contributions.

4. Explain Challenges Strategically

This is a delicate area where many applicants tend to lose focus. While it’s important to provide context for life circumstances, such as a career gap, academic break, or drop in grades, avoid dedicating most of your word count to these explanations. Overemphasizing challenges can detract from showcasing your strengths, achievements, and potential. Instead, frame past challenges as stepping stones that motivated your goals or demonstrated your resilience. Briefly address the circumstances, but ensure the focus stays on how you have grown and what you bring to the table rather than writing about excess minor details.  If the application includes an optional section for extenuating circumstances, save the detailed explanations for that space. Use the main application to confidently highlight your skills, experiences, and ambitions. Keep the spotlight on what makes you a strong candidate.

5. Show, Don’t Tell

Avoid vague statements like, “I care about education.” Many people share this belief.  Instead, bring your experiences to life with specific examples that demonstrate your actions and their impact. For instance: “I designed and implemented a peer tutoring program at my university, helping 20 students improve their grades by an average of 15%.” To make an even stronger impression, tie this example to your personal growth or your future goals. Add a reflection or realization that connects your experience to the opportunity you’re seeking. This approach not only showcases your impact but also gives evaluators a sense of your character and vision.

6. Address “Why This Opportunity” Directly

Use the application to clearly articulate the connection between you and the opportunity. Many evaluators will read statements such as “I am inspired to participate in this fellowship” or “Attending this conference will change my life”. Though positive, these statements very little in terms of why you are interested in this opportunity specifically.  Don’t assume the evaluator will automatically understand why this is the perfect fit for you. Every applicant has unique reasons for applying. Make yours stand out by showing how the opportunity aligns with your goals, experiences, and aspirations.
