Meet Angelique Camilla, who received a $500 grant as a graduate of the Rise Youth Small Business Program.
The Youth Small Business Program (YSBP) supports young people aged 16-29 to learn the basics of building a small business and helps them apply those skills to developing an informed and actionable business plan. Founded in mental health mindfulness and delivered over 8-10 weeks, YSBP participants actively contribute to twice-weekly facilitator-led lessons and group mentorship sessions that can empower them as more confident, capable entrepreneurs. Whether you’re looking to launch a side hustle, build a full-time business, or learn more about entrepreneurship, the YSBP is the perfect place to begin your journey.
How did you learn about Rise and the Youth Small Business Program?
I had just returned from a long trip with the clear intention of focusing on building my business. While settling back into life in Canada, I came across a Facebook ad for Rise. I remembered hearing about the program a year earlier at a conference, and it felt like the perfect moment to explore the opportunity. I was open to new possibilities and thought I had nothing to lose by applying. I’m grateful I did, as it opened up valuable opportunities I hadn’t anticipated.
Why did you apply? What was your goal(s)?
I applied to help kickstart my feminine embodiment coaching business. After spending a year getting certified, I realized starting a business was more complex than I expected. I wanted to do it right, and I knew I needed extra support and resources to guide me.
What were the highlights or 2-3 best parts of participating?
The highlights for me were firstly, the opportunity to make meaningful connections and network. Secondly, I gained clarity on my business plan, identifying both my strengths and areas for growth. Lastly, as part of the program I dived into the financials of my business, exploring which services would be most profitable, and understanding how to prepare for potential challenges and opportunities.
What advice would you give to future applicants?
Do thorough research on your business idea to ensure it aligns with your values and interests. Draw inspiration from your own life experiences to craft a compelling story behind why you’re starting your business. Most importantly, believe you deserve the support, the connections, and the chance to grow.
Make the most of the two-month program by fully engaging with the resources and opportunities available. Build connections, soak up as much knowledge as you can, and approach each session with intention. Treat it as a serious investment in your growth—this is your time to learn, evolve, and prepare for what’s next.
